George (Donald Holden), Nasia (Candace Evanofski), Buddy (Curtis Cotton III), Sonya (Rachael Handy) and Vernon (Damian Jewan Lee) pass long summer days in talk, sport and just hanging around. But when an innocent game goes horrifically wrong, the kids find themselves caught up in tragic lie and are catapulted into a world of adult choices. George is afflicted with a malformed fontanelle which means he has to wear a football helmet to protect his skull. He also has to keep out of contact with water for fear of brain damage. But, despite his handicap, dreamy George becomes a hero.
A stunningly impressive first feature by 25-year-old director David Gordon Green, George Washington is a classic coming-of-age story that wonderfully captures the delusions, fears and dangers of childhood. It's a hauntingly beautiful, warm, compassionate and humourous film that lingers in the mind long after the closing credits.

A well crafted indie

George Washington may not be to everyone's taste and even die hard indie fans may find it a little hard going, but if you like gently paced artistic films then it's worth a look.
