Rent Girl With A Pearl Earring (2003)

In order to support her family, seventeen-year-old Griet becomes a maid in the house of Johannes Vermeer and soon attracts the master painter's attention. Although worlds apart in upbringing and social standing, Vermeer recognises her intuitive understanding of his work and slowly draws her into his mysterious world of art and passion. Whilst she falls increasingly under Vermeer's spell, his volatile family quickly grow jealous of her. Maria, his shrewd mother-in-law, struggles to maintain the family's lavish lifestyle, and seeing that Griet inspires Vermeer, takes the decision to let their relationship to develop. Van Ruijven, also sensing the intimacy between master and maid, commissions Vermeer to paint Griet's portrait. The result will be one of the greatest paintings ever created... but at what cost?

If you love period drama, then this will satisfy.

The film was beautiful to watch, and although the dialogue is sometimes a bit slow-paced, I thought the overall impact was stunning. It gives you a taste of what life looked and felt like in 17th Century Delft-- all those Dutch paintings that are so fascinating to look at. I knew nothing of Vermeer, and now I want to visit an art museum to find out more .... impressive stuff.

This is really really good. You're on the edge of your seat all the way and you don't even notice it...no that's not a paradox. Really powerful and one of the best love stories ever - like a Romeo and Juliet but without death at the end. Scarlet Johnasen is great and really convincing. It's a real 'what if...' movie. Definately watch it!

Excellent period drama

Brilliant portrayal of 17th century holland and what life must have been like. Scarlett Johansson plays the part of a girl from a 'middle class' family who must work in service when her family hit hard times. She gets a job in the house of artist Vermeer with whom she connects. He treats her like a protagee, getting her to mix paints and eventually sitting for his famous painting. Their relationship causes jealously and bad feeling in the house with Vermeer's wife and rather spoilt children. Johansson is excellent as the quiet maid, whilst Firth is moody and enigmatic, complaining that his 'bread and butter' portraits do not allow him to be creative and experimental. We found it totally absorbing.
