Rent Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing and Charm School (2005)

For Frank Keane life has been empty since the unexpected death of his wife. But everything changes when, out driving one day he stops to help the victim of a car crash. The stranger shares with Frank a compelling tale of young love, youthful innocence and ballroom dance. He explains that he was on his way to keep a 40 year-old promise to his childhood sweetheart and with his dying breath begs Frank to keep that promise. And so, in the unlikely setting of Marilyn Hotchkiss’ Dancing & Charm School, a twist of fate finds Frank feeling passionate and alive for the first time in years.

Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing and Charm School review by Rubber Ducky

Sweet story

A nice little story with some fine actors in it. The main character is an Irish baker, played by Robert Carlyle, who unexpectedly hears the life story of a man (John Goodman) who has been in a car crash. The story is told through flashbacks to Goodman's childhood when he first attended the Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing and Charm School. Carlyle promises to go to a dance class to pass on a message to the woman Goodman was due to meet. The class contains an interesting assortment of characters who greet him warmly so he ends up going every week. Carlyle has been receiving group counselling after the death of his wife and the dance school provides him with more uplifting therapy. Gradually we find out more about the lives of Carlyle and Goodman and it is ultimately a poignant tale. All the acting is good but Donnie wahlberg as the macho, preening, 'I love myself' alpha male is particularly good.
