London psychiatrist Dr. Michael Glass (Morrissey) is charismatic, highly respected and at the top of his game. When Detective Superintendent Washburn (Thewlis) asks Glass to analyse a beautiful woman who has been linked to the mysterious death of a famous sports star, his entire world is turned upside down. The woman in question is Catherine Tramell (Stone), best-selling American crime novelist whose fiction has a habit of turning into reality. The magnetism between the two is immediate and Glass is intrigued by Catherine both mentally and physically. Quickly sucked into her web of lies and seduction, Glass' own basic instincts are uncovered as professional boundaries are blurred. As people around him are mysteriously murdered, a deadly battle of wits ensues between Glass and Tramell, leading to a startling climax in which he must make a choice that will change both their lives forever. - Actors:

Don't believe the hype! - Basic Instinct 2 review by Tim from London
Don't be put off by the response to this film when it was released in the cinema - this isn't half as bad as the reviews suggest. A shlocky erotic thriller ala Basic Instinct 1, except that the film replaces Michael Douglas' detective with David Morrissey's psychoanalyst. Lots of twists and turns with an ending that recalls 'the Usual Suspects' - and by the time the credits roll the viewer is still unclear about is real and what is fiction. I liked the tongue in cheek dialogue which is littered with freudian one liners and the portrayal of London which is centred around the glass towers of the city and the seediness of Soho - full of phallic symbols eg the Gherkin (without a red bus in sight). David Morrissey gives a strong tortured performance but it is of course Sharon Stone who dominates the film. I'm not too sure about Stan Collymore's performance however...! Not a classic but entertaining.
