Synopsis:
"Boyz N the Hood" is the critically acclaimed story about three friends growing up in a South Central Los Angeles neighborhood, and of street life where friendship, pain, danger and love combine to form reality. "The Hood" is a place where drive-by shootings and unemployment are rampant. But it is also a place where harmony co-exists with adversity, especially for the three young men growing up there: Doughboy (Ice Cube), an unambitious drug dealer; his brother Ricky (Morris Chestnut), a college-bound teenage father; and Ricky's best friend, Tre (Cuba Gooding Jr.), who aspires to a brighter future beyond the "The Hood".
In a world where a trip to the store can end in death, the friends have diverse reactions to their bleak surroundings. Tre's resolve is strengthened by a strong father (Larry Fishburne) who keeps him on the right track. But the lessons Tre learns are put to the ultimate test when tragedy strikes close to home, and violence seems like the only recourse.

****Boys N The Hood**** - Boyz n the Hood review by midway

Hard to beleive that at only 23 a young john singleton can write and direct his first film and make it such a masterpiece.

The story is set around 3 black men in a violent hood were burglery, drug dealing and even murder happens on a daily basis.

The story is set mainly around one character Tre styles played by Cuba Gooding Jr who as a child is sent to live with his father by his mother to set him straight.

The story mainly plays out how tre's father convinces and helps Tre not to take the usual route that kids in the hood grow up and take the drug dealing, burglery and violence route but his father teaches him to grow up and be a respectable member of society and thehood paths lead to nothing but bad places.

With excellent casting, 5 star acting all around and such an in depth story that will keep you glued to the screen. This movie is at time funny, smart and very emotional, but is mainly very real to what message the film is trying to put across.

A visceral and incredible debut, plus the launching of the careers of many actors including Ice Cube.

The story is one of growing up and trying to find your own identity in the tough, violent and racist streets of South Central. It is a world that the writer/director John Singleton knew well. The script is heavily based on his own upbringing and several of the characters were influenced by friends he had.

What this film does so well is flesh out the characters, as well as making them into people you really care about. Cuba Gooding Jr is outstanding, as is Laurence Fishburne as his tough father, who also desperately wants his son to become successful and not get caught up in gangbanging & murder. There are many moments where we get to know the characters personally, as well as seeing all the values they hold so dear.

This film is exceptional and so many films today based around these locations/stories owe everything to Boyz N The Hood. It is a touchstone film and one which has stood the test of time. Even today, it's scary how much of it is still frighteningly relevant.
