Synopsis:
Following the hugely successful Academy Award winning 'Burnt By The Sun' comes the complete sequel 'Burnt By The Sun 2', the epic action-packed Russian drama which follows the Nazi invasion of Russia, set in the Eastern Front of World War II. Directed by and starring the renowned Oscar winning filmmaker Nikita Mikhalkov, who plays a purged red army general Sergei Kotov. After escaping death when German bombers blow up his gulag, Kotov is soon left defending the motherland from fascist tanks. 'Burnt By The Sun 2' had one of the largest production budgets ever seen in Russian cinema and includes the remarkable Citadel, which was the official Russian Oscar entry of 2011, and Exodus.

Exodus (2010)
1941 Soviet Union leader Joseph Stalin is terrorising the people of Russia while the Nazis are advancing. Russian officer Kotov, who miraculously survived the death sentence in Stalin's Purge, is now fighting on the front lines. His daughter, Nadia, who survived a rape attempt by Nazi soldiers, is now a nurse risking her own life to save others. In the war-torn nation even former enemies are fighting together to defend their land.
Citadel (2011)
KGB Colonel Mitya's hunt for former Division Commander Kotov leads him to The Citadel - an impregnable German fortress on Russian soil where troops are sacrificed by the thousand in an ongoing siege. In this living hell, two adversaries, Mitya and Kotov, are reunited in an encounter that will turn their destinies inside out.

Epic film-making - Burnt by the Sun 2: Exodus and Citadel review by SC

Spoiler Alert
18/02/2026

Although the narrative may sometimes be risible, this is five hours of often epic film-making. The film mixes huge battle and war-torn scenes with quieter, more intimate scenes of the impact of the war upon Kotov's remaining family.

To watch the film is a big commitment, but I thought it worthwhile.
