- For a soccer-mad young girl, a crucial world cup qualifying match for Iran's national football team at the Azadi stadium in Tehran is the game of her dreams. But with women banned from the country's football grounds, she and several other equally dedicated and rebellious girls have only one way of infiltrating the crowd...by disguising themselves as boys. But with sharp-eyed soldiers policing the event and obstacles such as the lack of women's bathrooms to overcome, the street-smart girls find they have to use their wits and every trick in the book to see the match. A hilarious and engaging comedy, 'Offside' entertainingly illustrates the fight for women's rights in Iran.

A rare glimpse inside revolutionary Iran shows a distinct lack of shoe-bombing fanatics à la Daily Mail and a surprising number of features that we can quickly recognise; football as a national obsession- spot the Inter Milan and Brazil shirts- anxious parents, mouthy girls, jobsworth soldiers and the logistical challenges of using the toilet at half time. You’re left with the feeling that if we all ditched politics and spent more time on sport, we’d all get on a lot better…

Amazing how you can concoct an engaging film out of would-be spectators of a football match. There was no footage of the actual game, just the reactions of those not able to be in the actual stadium. There were some interesting insights in the attitudes of men who thought they were protecting their women. However there was nothing horrible, thank goodness, although what might have happened to the transgressing women was not made clear. The transformation from a football-indifferent army conscript into someone who finally went with the atmosphere was quite beguiling.
Worth seeing but just don't expect any football.
