It is 1943 and the Second World War has ended. Throughout the UK evacuees are returning home to their families. One such evacuee is Rusty Dickinson, who is met at the docks by her years away in America. It has been a time of dramatic transformation and everyone must learn to adapt to both the changes in the family and their surroundings. Peggy has a new found independence, she has spent the war working for the Women's Voluntary Service, raising Charlie - the younger brother whom Rusty has never met - and making many new friends. Rusty feels more American than British and can't get used to all of the restrictions which seem to be imposed upon her.
