It's 1972. In the southern U.S.. State of Georgia a mother and father (Morgan Freeman) are laying their son to rest, a victim of the Vietnam war. But to their dismay, the black war hero is refused burial in their town's segregated cemetery. It falls to major laird (John Lithgow) to help the family get the honourable burial their son deserves. But the major soon discovers that he is not just dealing with a racially divided community but also an increasingly suspicious death.
