Synopsis:
This is the film that catapulted Sylvester Stallone into the international spotlight and launched one of the most successful series of films in movie history, This is the story of a loser, a two bit boxer from Philadelphia, who gets a second chance in life by being offered an impossible shot at the heavyweight title. Stallone's performance is as powerful as his character's punches in the ring. This is one of the most exciting action movies you will ever see. Rocky is the simple story of a man whom fate chooses for a shot at glory in what has otherwise been an ordinary life.
And while this subject matter is nothing new, it was unusual for Hollywood to release an old-fashioned 'feel-good' movie in the seventies, a decade whose films were mostly unconventional in attitude and anti-establishment in tone. Rocky is, of course, a fairy tale, but by grounding its characters in an everyday reality, the filmmakers were able to make them seem real and alive. And making the major contribution to that sense of reality was Sylvester Stallone, an out-of-work actor/writer whose faith in himself took him from utter obscurity to world-wide fame and fortune virtually overnight.....

A Standard Boxing Story - Rocky review by GI

Spoiler Alert
29/07/2026

A classic American underdog story told in a sports and social drama that made Sylvester Stallone a major star. It led to a short franchise but this, the first, is the significant film although it follows a familiar and somewhat predictable path. It tells the story of a lowly street boxer, Rocky Balboa, who fights in clubs for a small fee and acts as a debt collector for a loan shark. He gets the one in a million chance to fight against the heavyweight champion of the world in a title fight. The film has some pacing issues and can feel a bit slow for the most part mainly, I think, because all such films build to the climactic bout and you are always waiting for that to happen. The best part of this film is the romance as Rocky ineptly woos a local girl, the brother of his drunk friend. Set in Philadelphia the film portrays the grubbiness of the poorer quarters where Rocky resides and contrasts those scenes nicely with the glitz and glamour of the boxing world that the champ inhabits. The film is a little dated in some ways when viewed today especially around the standard boxing film narrative but the film stands out as the making of Stallone and highlighting his talents as a screen writer.
