- Described as a comedy of menace, 'The Birthday Part' is a dramatic expose of contemporary mans inability to cope with his fears and guilt. Stanley (Robert Shaw), is lodging at a shabby seaside boarding house. When he's visited by two menacing and mysterious strangers, who insist on throwing a birthday party in his honour, his world changes dramatically.

Avoid DVD - The Birthday Party review by TB
Was looking forward to the film - fan of Joseph Losey's Pinter adaptions from the 60s and looking forward to seeing one of Friedkin's first features. However didn't end up watching as the DVD print in circulation [as of August 2020] here on Cinema Paradiso is horrible.
Should have guessed based on the tackily printed disc - it's one of those horrible bargain-bin releases from the early 2000s. Film looks like a VHS rip and it's cropped to the wrong aspect ratio. One scan through the chapters and returned right away.
Such a shame that all of Friedkin's work hasn't been restored by this point but if I want to watch a low quality copy, I'll do it for free on the internet thank you very much!
