Watched by millions of people round the world, the Boat Race is one of the most famous contests of all time, a titanic struggle between sixteen men of extraordinary strength, skill, courage and determination. But in 1987 it became a contest not between two ancient universities, but between 'arrogant' Americans and 'antiquated' Brits. Oxford, stung by a humiliating defeat in the '86 race, enlisted five top Americans to turn the tide against Cambridge.
