Synopsis:
Inspired by the character and early works of James Herriot. the much loved English veterinary surgeon and author of the bestselling works 'All Creatures Great and Small', 'Young James Herriot' finds James (Iain De Caestecker) at the birth of his career in the 1930s, taking up his place at the Glasgow Veterinary College. From his first day as a young student, James suffers the pranks of his associates, makes new friends, and discovers that the lodging he had paid for doesn't exist. Thrust immediately into hard times, his newfound friends find him a room with them at the house of the eccentric Aunt Elspeth.
James is confident and inspired - but he soon discovers that a good deal more than confidence and inspiration are needed to assess the physical health of animals and, in some cases, the emotional health of his acquaintances. As he attempts to mend sick horses, ailing sheep and a kennel of purebred dogs, he soon discovers that life and medicine is much more complicated than he first thought; and that passion - no matter how well-intentioned - can be a very deceptive guide.

Poor in every way - Young James Herriot review by SB

Spoiler Alert
23/02/2023

Even with such fine cast members as Amy Manson and Joanna Vanderham, this is a hopeless offering. The imagined tale of James Herriot's days at veterinary college, the stereotypes (mad professor, evil horse owner, mud, feisty females, eccentric Englishmen) are laid on with a trowel. If you are imagining some believable prelude to 'All Creatures Great and Small', forget that. To add insult to injury, the first disc contains just ONE one-hour episode and a few extras, so it is very poor value in that sense as well.
