Rent Jean Renoir: La Grande Illusion (1937)

La grande illusion

Based on a true story from World War I, La Grade Illusion tells of the attempted escape from a German prison of three French soldiers. The working-class Marechal, the middle class Rosenthal and the aristocratic Boieldieu are held in a prison in a fortress by German commandant, von Rauffenstein. Renoir illustrates through the relationships between the four characters, how class is both reaffirmed and transcends the social chaos of war. Universally accepted as a cinematic masterpiece, La Grande Illusion is a powerful film about the futility of war and the ever present hope for piece.
