Steve Martin plays Jonas Nightingale, a travelling preacher who performs 'miracles' for paying converts. Martin's portrayal of a con man posing as an evangelical preacher is suitably dry and manic, creating a uniquely vibrant character who colours the whole film with energy and verve.
'Leap Of Faith' is a well-constructed satire about the phenomenon of miracles and the unwavering belief people place in others. Jonas's manipulation of unsuspecting innocents is superb and Martin relishes the opportunity to go all out in his depiction of the bizarre rituals performed by religious healers.The excellent supporting cast, including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Liam Neeson and Debra Winger prove a great foil for Martin's comedy focus.
When Jonas and his team become stranded in a small town, the highly sceptical residents push his powers of persuasion to the limit and threaten to expose the duplicitous preacher. The film's more serious themes of fraud and religion are expertly offset against Martin's excellent comedy turn as the con man turned evangelist preacher. 'Leap Of Faith' is a witty and perceptive film that pokes fun at the gullibility of people and the extent to which they can be convinced of almost anything!
