For Pierre Brochant and his friends, Wednesday is the day for idiots. The principle is simple: each person has to bring along an idiot. The one who brings the most spectacular idiot wins the prize. Tonight, Brochant is ecstatic. He has found a gem. The ultimate idiot. "A world champion idiot!" Francois Pignon, a lowly accountant at the finance ministry, a man who is devoted to his construction of models made of matchsticks. What Brochant doesn't know is that Pignon is a real jinx, a past master in the art of causing chaos...

Every Wednesday night a wealthy Parisian publisher named Pierre Brochant and his friends play a cruel game. The rules are quite simple, they have try and outdo each other by bringing the most patently idiotic person they can find to join them for dinner, he who finds the biggest idiot wins. Pierre thinks he's on to a sure fire winner when he gets his hands on Francois Pignon, an bumbling accountant who works for the French ministry of finance and whose main pastime is building scale replicas of monuments from matchsticks as a way of forgetting his beloved wife, who ran away two years previously. But Pierre's invitation of Mr Pignon to dinner is only the start of what is to become a terrible nightmare. This film has been sitting at the top of my wish list for what seemed an eternity, to the point that I was giving up any hope of actually seeing it, but finally it was dispatched and I have to say it was well worth the wait. 'Le Diner De Cons' is one of the funniest films I have ever seen, and with one hilarious event after another, you'll think it can't continue getting any funnier, but it does. If you enjoy this then check out Francis Veber's 2001 film 'The Closet'.

Wow, the French are sooo cruel!

An eye opener for us as we didn't realise the French sense of humour was so cruel! Basically, a group of friends meet regularly for dinner and they compete to see who can bring the most annoying and boring guest. There is a moral side to the film, but it is not done in a 'preachy' way. A fun couple of hours with some laugh out loud gags. You'll need to concentrate though because the subtitles do flash by rather quickly!

An interestesting concept for a movie that is both hillarious and one that works really well. This movie had us both laughing out loud and I would recommend it to anyone. Superb!

This is the original idea of D W T Ss. It is totally French. French plot (revolves around mistresses and elegance) French comedy (farce) and French style of cinematography (difficult to define but easy to recognise). It is much better than the later American version but the focus on ridiculing a socially inept man is still awkward viewing.Otherwise brilliant.

Now I’ve seen everything- a stagey French farce populated by annoying French stereotypes that’s FUNNY! Somehow, despite it being largely based in one location and featuring a tiny cast of characters, it succeeds in being genuinely amusing throughout, largely due to the effortless clowning of Jacques Villeret, as adept with physical comedy as he is with wordplay. Some of the supporting characters feel a bit bolted on and Thierry Lhermite’s angst-ridden wife appears to be in another movie altogether, but it’s brilliant to see Lhermite’s smug bourgeois certainties crumbling in the face of Villeret’s hapless ineptitudes.
