Pom Cruise plays Civil War hero Capt. Nathan Algren, who comes to Japan to fight the Samurai and ends up pledging himself to their cause. Ken Watanabc plays Katsumoto, a Samurai leader facing a vanishing way of life, whose destiny becomes intertwined with that of the American captain.

A brilliant historical epic set (mostly) in Japan in the late 1800's. Tom Cruise's character is plucked from a miserable, drunken existence to train Japanese soldiers as the Emperor tries to keep control against the rebellion. Cruise is soon captured by the rebels and learns to live in peace with himself in the honourable Samurai tradition. The exploration of Samurai culture and the generosity shown to an adversary is fascinating and touching. Ken Watanabe is absolutely outstanding as the Samurai leader and Cruise plays one of his best roles. The cinematography is glorious and beautiful to look at. A brilliant film which touches on a range of themes, including honour, govenment corruption, cultural traditions, racism and power. There is also a gentle romantic sub-story. It's an emotional tear-jerker and essential viewing.

How can a movie that's so beautifully shot, well directed and has all the sweep and grandeur of some of the old hollywood historical epics not get a better rating?
Forget Cruise and his recent activities and watch Cruise at his best in one of the finest films of his career. Battle scenes are epic and the acting by all concerned is of a high standard.
This is Tom's best movie since the superb A Few Good Men and deserved all the awards and accolades it got. If you are into historical epics than this film is right up your alley, and even if you are not, you should give it a try and be reminded that when they can be bothered, Hollywood can still provide a dramatic, thought provoking epic from time to time. First class movie.
