Mexico City, 1940. Communist parades are celebrating May day. In a hotel room near Zocalo Square there are two people who are destined to play a major part in the events leading to the assassination of Leon Trotsky, the ageing idealist and 'dedicated Marxist and atheis' banished from Russia by Josef Stalin who has been given sanctuary by the Mexican Government - Frank Jacson, travelling on a Canadian passport, who claims to be a Belgian in Mexico avoiding national service, and Gita Samuels, a one-time translator. Jacson shows no outward signs of being interested in politics but is pathologically opposed to Trotsky and is involved with those who wish to silence him. In a suburb if Coyaocan, Trotsky and his wife live in a heavily protected villa. On the evening of May 23, a group of militant Stalinists invade the villa and fire machine guns at Trotsky's bed. Trotsky and his wife escape unharmed but now the job of disposing of Trotsky is left to Jacson and heraeeds the assistance of Gita to gain access to his target. But Gita, a supporter of Trotsky becoming suspicious... - Actors:

A real dud from Losey. Avoid it - The Assassination of Trotsky review by NR
Joesph Losey directed some remarkably good films, famously The Servant and The Go Between. But this is a real dud, almost a parody of what a historical film (about the assassination of Leon Trotsky in Mexico in 1940) should be.
Richard Burton was, when well cast and directed, a superb actor. Here he appears to be sleep-acting., He stalks around with an obviously fake goatee beard that does not make him look at all like Trotsky. Nor does he act like the haunted intellectual exile. The other characters are even less convincing. Only the marvellous old cars are of any interest, and they are not enough to make a movie worth watching.
