Synopsis:
From Oscar-winning director Giuseppe Tornatore (Cinema Paradiso), 'Ennio' celebrates the life and legacy of the legendary Italian composer Ennio Morricone, who passed away on 6 July 2020. Through interviews with directors, screenwriters, musicians, songwriters, critics and collaborators, Tornatore's documentary retraces the life and works of the cinema's most popular and prolific 20th century composer - who wrote over 500 scores for film and television and sold over 70 million records - from his cinema debut with Sergio Leone, to winning an Academy Award for 'The Hateful Eight' in 2016.

Disappointing - Ennio review by LC

Spoiler Alert

Whilst a lot of Morricone's music is great, it doesn't make for a great documentary. There's virtually no tension or drama to his life, everyone loves him, and there's very little of interest to say. 2 and a half hours is a long time to watch old men singing his praises, and there's a lot of soundtracks to dreadful Italian "Giallo" movies. I was hoping for more.

Interesting documentary on a legend of cinema - Ennio review by JD

Spoiler Alert
23/10/2022

Id never heard of this guy (yes, im an uncultured neanderthal) but of course you only need to mention this is the guy who came up with the score for those westerns and my interest was peaked. I can think of no films which are so fondly remembered - simply for the score.

It also seems that Ennio was almost oblivious to his abilities. Scenes with him show his clear love for his craft (which seems he didnt really have for working in cinema through most of his career)

He seems extremely humble and lacked the arrogance you get from such incredibly capable people. It takes those around him to clarify how good both he and his work was. Most of the films he worked on were 'niche' to say the least. However as his career spanned such a period we still get to enjoy his work in some modern films

Well worth watching as even if youve never heard of Ennio, its extremely unlikely you haven't enjoyed his work on more than one occasion.

Its shame guys like this dont live for ever. Luckily, his work almost certainly will.
