Synopsis:
Spartacus was the slave who rose to defy the Roman Empire. (Starring Anthony Flanagan, Robert Clenister and Andrew Tiernan) Captured and made into a slave, then trained as Gladiator, Spartacus would resent the cruelty of his captors and rise to challenge and rock the foundation of the Roman world. Spartacus proved to be a brilliant leader of a guerrilla band that he grew into a menacing army. But his vision to protect his people would also show the human and flawed side of his character that would affect his future decisions. In 73 BC, a deserter from the Roman Army was sold in the slave market.
Yet only a few months later, he led his fellow slaves and gladiators in a bid for freedom that turned into one of the biggest rebellions Rome had ever faced. The story of Spartacus is one of the great epics of the Classical World. But behind the myth, his real story is even more remarkable. He was a reluctant hero yet a man of such charisma that he was chosen by his fellow escapees to lead their slave revolt. Spartacus grew to become a formidable guerrilla leader whose ragtag army of slaves was able to defeat Rome's supposedly 'invincible' legions, in battle after battle. Spartacus also realised he had to find a permanent solution to protect his people and provide them with a new life. He had to find them an escape route or bring the final battle back to Rome. Spartacus would have to face his Nemesis in the brutal form of Marcus Crassus, Rome's greatest general. The pressure for both these men was enormous 'it had to be total victory at all cost'. The story of Spartacus's enduring fame as fighter, legend and inspiration remains to this day. His achievement that a lowly slave could overturn the unequal, brutal society in which he lived and gained freedom was a dream worth fighting for. This is the story of the man who thought the unthinkable: that a band of renegade slaves could take on the glory that was Rome. But above all, Spartacus was the warrior who brought Rome to the brink of revolution and who won immortal fame as an icon of oppressed people around the world.

Strange casting - Spartacus review by MD

Spoiler Alert
10/05/2019

Slightly different interpretation of the Spartacus story, which I found a pleasant surprise. However, the casting to my mind was a little off. The whole film had the air of a bunch of office workers on a weekend outing of a historical reenactment society. The gladiators didn't seem very fit and were kind of almost middle aged. Spartacus himself was in my opinion sadly miscast, unconvincing and a little chinless. Having said that, on the whole I did enjoy the film.
