Escaping yet another abusive ex-husband, Mary Jo Walker (Janet McTeer) grabs her spunky, foul-mouthed 12-year old daughter Ava (Kimberly J.Brown) and flees from the dusty backwaters of the South. Armed with only her Southern charm and unwavering optimism, Mary Jo goes in search of a new love interest. Ava convinces her mother to take a chance on a fresh start in a new paradise - Starlight beach, the "postcard picture" of sunny California. Within weeks of their arrival, Jack Ranson, a ruggedly handsome truck driver enters their lives. But Jack is as abusive and controlling as the men she has previously left.
