Stephen King's the Stand review by Shatner's Bassoon

A disappointing mini-series.

I’m a big Stephen King fan and will pretty much watch anything written by or based on Stephen King’s work. However, ‘The Stand’ is a bit of a disappointment. Clocking in at nearly six hours long, and with King adapting his original novel, producing, and taking a minor acting role in, you would expect this TV mini-series to do justice to the epic novel on which it’s based. The truth is ‘The Stand’ is at best pretty average and at worst a bit boring. A lot of the blame has to lie with director Mick Garris, the story takes well over 90 minutes to get going and when finally the plot unfolds and begins to flow Garris omits huge chunks of the plot that were in the original novel. This wouldn’t be so bad but there is such a huge chunk of the story missing from the end of disk one and the start of disk two that you’ll think that the disk is missing a couple of chapters. Overall the whole six hours just plods along at its own pace and even though the story holds your attention throughout, mainly due to some really good characters, you still end up feeling a little underwhelmed at the end! If you’ve not seem them yet, ‘Rose Red’, ‘Storm Of The Century’ and the 2004 remake of ‘Salems Lot’ are far superior and vastly more enjoyable Stephen King mini-series.
