Oscar-winning composer, pioneer of electronic music, environmental activist and one of the most important artists of our era, Ryuichi Sakamoto's prolific career spans over four decades. From techno-pop stardom to film composing ('The Revetiant', 'The Last Emperor', 'Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence' and 'The Sheltering Sky'), the evolution of his music has coincided with his own life journeys. Following the Fukushima power station disaster, Sakamoto became an iconic figure in Japan's social movement against nuclear power and in 2014 he discovered he had throat cancer. This intimate documentary follows his return to music after his illness, as his haunting awareness of life leads to a resounding new musical masterpiece. Very interesting picture of the creative process at work and human tracking of illness. For those who are happy with in-depth slowish films.

A good insight into the mind of a composer - Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda review by AER
Ryuichi Sakamoto is a renowned composer and former Japanese pop star (Yellow Magic Orchestra / electronic solo work) but he's most widely appreciated for this film soundtracks (The Last Emperor / Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence). Coda see the composer at a time in his life where he is beign treated for throat cancer but is now renewing his zeal and ability to work on new projects. Released in 2017, this covers areas as wide as compostion and his opposition to nuclear power in Japan. We visit Fukujima with him to see the destruction of the 2011 tsunami... It's a well-paced documentary about an artist getting back to work and we as a viewer feel privileged to go along for the ride for a while.
