Rent Hard Candy (2005)

A smart, charming teenage girl, Hayley probably shouldn't be going to a local coffee shop to meet Jeff a 30-something fashion photographer she met on the Internet. But before she knows it, she's mixing drinks at Jeff's place and stripping for an impromptu photo shoot. It's Jeff's lucky night. But Hayley isn't as innocent as she looks, and the night takes a sinister turn for the worse when she begins to exact her unique brand of revenge on Jeff for scandalous crimes she believes he has committed in the past.

Not my kind of candy

I had high hopes of this film because people whose judgement I respect had raved about it.For me though, it was rather a let-down because it was basically a two-hander and this put an immense burden on the two leads as they were the focus for the entire running time of the film. Both do a reasonable job too, Wilson is watchable throughout despite spending most of the film lashed to various bits of furniture and Page's contribution is a prime specimen of that common visitor to our shores, the Lesser Spotted Damaged American Teen.Once the lively opening is done and the trap is sprung, though, all you have is two people arguing for an hour with a bit of mutilation thrown in. And frankly, I can get that at work. (Have you met my boss??)

Hard Candy.

Brilliant acting from Ellen Page throughout. This movie was decent but far from brilliant. I like the fact that it's fast paced. There's no time wasted to get right to the center of the film's concept. When she wears her red hooded sweater, sort of suggesting a little red riding hood theme. That was quite a nice touch. Only this time the big bad wolf has met his match. Worth seeing once for lovers of the horror genre.

Interesting

We would recommend this film, it's definitely worth a look. Superbly acted by both main characters - is he really the sort of man she suspects him of being, or is she just a naive, or even insane, teenager? You'll side with both him and her throughout the film and it'll keep you guessing to the end. A little uncomfortable to watch at times too.

Heavily flawed thriller.

I was expecting better things from Hard Candy, but in reality this is a heavily flawed thriller packed full of plot holes. The film deserves a lot of credit for its subject matter and the fact pretty much the entire film is a two hander between Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson. Both actors do a fine job of carrying the film and the story holds your attention throughout. The trouble is the film is absolutely packed full of really dumb plot holes and character wise as the film progresses both characters come across as more and more unlikeable. You get the sense that the director thought it was a clever ploy to make your sympathy switch between both characters, but by the end of the film I pretty much had no sympathy for either of them, and the end result is fairly unsatisfying and poorly written film.
