Better than the original!

A dark, menacing remake of the 1971 original of the same name, the story of Willard (Crispin Glover), a shy, mysterious, introvert who discovers he has a unique bond with the rats that have infested his basement. He befriends a nice, small white rat who he names Socrates, and a big, bad rat named Ben. Both of whom, along with the hundreds of other rats, can do whatever he tells them to do. Director Glen Morgan manages to give the film a dark stylish look, a creepy atmosphere, and some surprisingly macabre humour. Worth renting for the excellent 'The Year of the Rat' documentary, which provides a fascinating, honest and surprisingly candid insight into the making of Willard, from its conception to its public release.
