Synopsis:
What have talking snakes, immaculate conceptions, walking on water, extra- terrestrial travellers, a container load of truckers, Islamic hip-hop and the natural highs of the Cannabis Ministries got to do with spiritual salvation? These are some of the questions director Larry Charles and comedian, commentator and all round religious sceptic, Bill Maher seek answers to in Religulous. Award winner Maher reflects on his own religious upbringing and travels to Jerusalem, Egypt, London, Amsterdam, The Vatican and across the United States exploring the role of religion in today's society.
Along the way he talks to believers, non-believers, religious leaders, self professed messiahs, atheists, extremists, politicians, agnostics, academics and the average man on the street looking to lift the lid on their beliefs.

Spoiler Alert

Realistically you cannot tackle a huge subject like religion in one documentary. Instead Maher takes a satirical approach, mixing his own views with straightforward talking. A series of worldwide interviews in historical locations prompts debate on Maher's perceived flaws in religion. The end result is a little repetitive, tiresome and fragmented, leaving the viewer jaded and less informed for the experience. Religulous showcases some of the frankly bizarre US Christian churches, their hypocrisy and locations such as a Holy Land Theme Park. The 'did he just say that?' moments are almost worth waiting for, but you cannot help but feel that Louis Theroux would have done a better job.
