Synopsis:
"I own this town". But owning is getting expensive for old-school London gangster Lenny Cole (Tom Wilkinson). A wealthier foreign mob is moving in with a riverfront property swindle. A small-timer (Gerard Butler) and his crew think they can play both sides and become big time. Now add a hard-as-ice accountant (Thandie Newton), a rocker playing dead to boost sales, wannabe music moguls (Jeremy Piven and Chris Bridges), a missing painting and a mad mosh of money and muscle, and youve got a real RocknRolla. From Guy Ritchie comes a fierce and funny caper, a smash-mouth cinematic smackdown of sex, thugs and rock 'n' roll.

One Trick Pony - RocknRolla review by CP Customer

Spoiler Alert
07/02/2009

Don't be fooled by the return to form for Guy Ritchie. In essence all he has done is retreated to the Lock Stock formula and given it a whirl, except this time with Russians and London property.

The end result is a poor film. Terrible MTV-inspired editing, a tiresome script and characters you don't care about. Easily one of the worst films of the year. Unfortunately I cannot see him stopping with this.

Usual Ritchie mockney gangsters, full of words and action but no real substance - RocknRolla review by RP

Spoiler Alert
25/01/2012

This is a Guy Ritchie film, directed like 'Lock, Stock' or 'Snatch', with the usual Ritchie mockney gangsters, full of words and action but no real substance.

The story reminded me of the far superior 'The Long Good Friday'. In that film it is US mob money moving in on the London property boom of the 1980s, in this film Russian mob money moving in on the London property boom of the 2000s. There, it was the IRA who did for the lead characters, here it is a pair of unstoppable Russian war criminals.

With 'RocknRolla' Guy Ritchie has returned to something of his earlier form after a few duds, so is you like Guy Ritchie's style and are amused by stunts like feeding villains to the crayfish then you might just enjoy this. It didn't do much for me – but it isn't a bad effort and I'll give it a too-high 3/5 stars. I've seen worse.
