Stephen Elliott (James Franco) is enjoying a moment of fame and notoriety after publishing a memoir depicting a tough childhood at the mercy of a brutalising father (Ed Harris). But what goes up must come down and when his estranged father resurfaces, claiming that Stephen fabricated the dark childhood that fuelled his best-selling book, it all comes down with a crash. Lifted by a new romance with the beautiful and enigmatic Lana (Amber Heard), Stephen jumps when his editor Jen (Cynthia Nixon) gives him the chance to shadow the infamous murder trial of Hans Reiser (Christian Slater) for a new book.
