Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival, and available for the first time on DVD, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is an unforgettable story of a lost love, told entirely in song.
In the small French seaside town of Cherbourg the lives and hopes of shop-girl Genevieve (Catherine Deneuve) and her garage mechanic boyfriend Guy (Nino Castelnuovo) are shattered when he is drafted to fight in the Algerian war. Discovering that she is pregnant, Genevieve decides to marry the decent and honourable diamond merchant, Roland Cassard (Marc Michel), but lives with the knowledge that her true love lies elsewhere. After Guy's return from the war, it is a frosty Esso filling station on Christmas Eve that provides the unlikely setting for the lovers' next meeting.
Restored in 1992, this version of the film retains its original Technicolor vibrancy, and features a richly details Dolby Stereo soundtrack supervised by Agnes Varda (Demy’s wife and fellow film-maker) and Michel Legrand, composer and conductor of the film’s evocative score.
