American Splendor (2003)
Grinding out a living as a filing clerk in a Clevland hospital, Harvey Pekar relieves the monotony of his daily routine discussing everything from rock 'n' roll and the decline of American culture to new flavours of jellybeans. For Harvey, life in all its unpredictable glory becomes an obsession and he begins to record his observations in a collection of stories he calls 'American Splendor'. As grumpy as it is hilarious, the first edition of American Splendor is eventually published - with a little help from legendary comic book illustrator Robert Crumb - and the cantankerous curmudgeonly Harvey becomes a hero for millions of Americans. He achieves critical acclaim, celebrity status and, most unlikely of all, finds true love. Before camcorders, before webcams, before reality TV, there was Harvey Pekar. This is the true and extraordinary story of his life.
