Rent The Stranger (1946)

The stranger begins in postwar Germany where a meeting of the War Crimes Commission decides that a heinous Nazi war criminal (Konstantin Shayne) should be released from prison in the hope that he will lead the commission to his superior, the infamous Franz Kindler (Orson Welles), one of the architects of the genocide against the Jews. A Federal Agent (Edward C. Robinson) is assigned to follow Shayne. The nervous, unattractive little man Shayne winds his way through Europe and Latin America and finally arrives in the small college town of Harper, Connecticut where Kindler is living under the name of Charles Rankin. Realising he is being followed, Shayne knocks out his pursuer and, with the aid of the phone book, finds Rankin's address. On arrival, he only finds Rankin's fiancee (Loretia Young), the daughter of a prominent judge, preparing for their marriage later that day. On his return, Rankin is enraged to find that Shayne has traced him to harper. He gleans what little information he can from Shayne before strangling him. leaving his body to bury later that day - after the wedding ceremony. Robinson recovers and, posing as an antique dealer, goes to the local store where he learns from the obese, checker-playing owner of Rankin's plan to restore the town's old clock in its 125 foot tower. Robinson is convinced that Rankin is his man as it is known that Kindler is an expert on clocks. Robinson gains the trust of the judge's family and eventually decides to tell Young the real identity of her husband. She is shown proof and confronts her husband who, in turn, plans to have her killed. The plot fails and he attempts to kill her himself. Unable to carry out the deed he flees to the clock tower where he meets his gory death, in a way suiting the misdemeanours of his terrible past. This film portrays the most chilling acts of a Nazi, a man who is smug, arrogant, cynical, amoral and wholly self-confident and feels he is superior to all others. He is evil incarnate.
