In 1922 Fritz Lang made the two-part film, Dr Mabuse, der Spieler , one of the most sensational crime thrillers ever filmed. He resuscitated his evil genius ten years later for a talkie sequel, Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse. The original film had ended with Mabuse's madness, capture and incarceration. This is precisely where the sequel picks up the story. Mabuse has been locked away in an asylum for ten years, but his crime organisation is still perpetrating an insane orgy of wanton destruction, threats, shoot-outs, thefts, explosions, bombings, burnings, and floodings. Rudolf Klein-Rogge reprises his role as Dr. Mabuse. Otto Wernicke is back as Inspector Lohmann, who tracked down Peter Lorre's child murderer in Fritz Lang's M. Oscar Beregi portrays Dr. Baum, and Gustav Diessl plays Kent. Fritz Arno Wagner, whose wonderfully fluid cinematography was featured in M, is behind the camera. Banned by the Nazis, The Testament of Dr. Mabuse is one of Fritz Lang's most inventive crime thrillers and one of cinema's most accomplished early talkies.

Technically impressive, lively ... effective ... but rationally and logically preposterous: impact and effect have been given precedence over coherence and sense of plot ... supernatural events allow the cutting of rational corners! There are also ambiguities and discontinuities ... poorly matched disparate plot lines? ... which are carried through on the vigour of the action but also reflect Fritz Lang’s own ambiguities of intent (political? anti-nazi or not?) and his dubious accounts of dealings with Doctor Goebbels and the regime. The accompanying “documentary essay” is as interesting as the film itself!
