New York 1988, Bobby Green has changed his name to conceal his family connection to a long line of distinguished New York cops in order to pursue ambitions as a Brooklyn nightclub owner. As he turns a blind eye to the drug dealers around him, he comes face to face with the family he abandoned when his brother (Mark Wahlberg) and father (Robert Duvall) crack down on the club. Now Bobby must choose a side. Is he going to turn informant or will he help run the biggest crime ring in New York history?

Understated brilliance

This is one of the best films I've ever seen. It helps that I'm a huge fan of both Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Wahlberg, who are both fantastic in this film. Eva Mendes is also a revelation, never seen her in a dramatic role before and she's very good. What I love about this film is the understated yet compelling storyline, and the pace at which it unfolds. It's subtle yet superb acting from all the lead actors, I found it gripping from start to finish and would highly recommend.
