Synopsis:
Zulu is one of the great movies, an epic adventure of courage in the face of incredible odds. Based on a true story it tells the amazing tale of 100 British soldiers who stood fast against an overwhelming force of 4000 of the Zulu nation's mightiest warriors in the defence of Rorkes Drift in 1879. Set amongst the stunning South African scenery, 'Zulu' is a landmark action film and a fitting tribute to some of the most magnificent acts of heroism in the history of warfare. Michael Caine's role as the arrogant but courageous Lt. Bromhead brought him international fame, and there are powerful performances from other great British actors including Stanley Baker and Jack Hawkins.

Good historical film - Zulu review by Big Bob

Fabulous cinematography and sweeping landscapes. Excellent acting from Caine and Baker in particular, you really feel the sense of dread and desperation. Brings some of the attitudes of the time to the fore, but also dismisses some preconceptions. A very well made film, and very effective considering CGI etc was not available over 50 years ago.

Epic High Definition - Zulu review by CP Customer

A remarkable transfer of Zulu we have here in high definition for the first time ever. The film itself is an epic, with fantastic scenes, backdrops and performances. Endfield and the producers put together a perfect assembly of talent in front of and behind the camera, managing to come in on budget. The picture clarity is stunning, especially for a film of this age which can stand alongside many releases today. I won't go into the plot itself as I would expect it to be fairly well known, given the constant appearances on television over the years! However don't let your familiarity restrain you from seeing Zulu on Blu Ray. It also features a great selection of extras, that highlight the work involved in organising the project and dealing with the South African authorities at the time, who limited how much they could mix with the Zulu's themselves. Very interesting thoughts and memories from all involved, it is a shame Michael Caine wasn't available for more input or a commentary track, given this was his first major breakthrough role.

JOLLY-GOOD FUN - Zulu review by Frank Talker™

Spoiler Alert
19/04/2025

Boy’s Own adventure that treats its natives as genetic equals; while suggesting that the British Empire was essentially a mistake through the lives lost defending a pointless military-position.

The story is also very much a part of so-called Black History as well as White – a tacit assumption rare in White-made movies (ironic, given that the film was shot in apartheid South Africa.)

The Zulu here never experience the White-supremacist stereotyping found in, for example, most Hollywood Westerns regarding Native-Americans. There is not only drama between the Whites, but also between Blacks and Whites; effectively doubling the dramatic possibilities.

This is both a subtle exploration of the whys and the wherefores of British imperial failure in being not only anti-war, but also in being as non-White supremacist as it is pro-Welsh.

This superb war movie mixes violent action with subtle comments on the English class-system in the initially-nitpicking relationship between stars Stanley BAKER and Michael CAINE. All beautifully played-out through the high quality of the acting and the solid writing of the fully-realised characters.

Ultimately, the film suggests that the mutual respect of equals in battle can finally trump the need for any kind of conflict at all - both within and between communities. Hopelessly idealistic, of course, but jolly-good fun.
