Synopsis:
Above shadowy, crime-infested streets a masked avenger watches. Denny Colt (Gabriel Macht) was one of Central City’s finest cops until a gangster’s bullet ended his life. Now Fate has brought him back from the beyond as The Spirit, a street-hardened hero who faces off against seductive foes like the voluptuous Sand Saref (Eva Mendes) and the alluring Silken Floss (Scarlett Johansson). Then, of course, there’s his evil archenemy, The Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson), with a mission to wipe out Spirit’s beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality...

A complete disappointment. - The Spirit review by CP Customer

Spoiler Alert
26/07/2009

I was a big fan of Frank Miller’s ‘Sin City’, and considering ‘The Spirit’ was directed and written by Frank Miller, I was expecting a film very much in the same vein as ‘Sin City’, but this film is a complete disappointment. Based on Will Eisner’s cult comic strip, ‘The Spirit’ takes the slick graphical look of Frank Miller’s and Robert Rodriquez’s ‘Sin City’ and patches it together with a story which is close to a really bad 60’s TV episode of Dick Tracy or Batman. The story frequently makes little sense, the quality of acting is universally poor, Scarlett Johansson is particularly bad, Samuel Jackson just gives the same ‘bad guy’ performance he gives in countless other films, and Gabriel Macht is a bizarre choice of lead actor, and the dialogue is cliché ridden with often embarrassingly bad and unfunny one-liners. If you’re expecting a dark edgy film noir thriller like ‘Sin City’ you’ll be massively disappointed, ‘The Spirit’ is nothing more than dull fight scenes, lame dialog and an unbelievable hero, all wrapped up in pretty CGI.
