- Synopsis:
- This dark suburban satire tells the story of a man who is accused of adultery by his ex-fiancée and forced to move in with his parents. While he fights for custody of his four-year-old daughter, he is gradually sucked into a bitter dispute between his parents and their neighbours regarding an old and beautiful tree that casts a shadow on the neighbours deck. As the dispute intensifies property is damaged, pets mysteriously go missing, security cameras are being installed and there is a rumour that the neighbour was seen with a chainsaw.

Goes too far over the top! - Under the Tree review by TE
Sometimes less is more, and this film demonstrates that fact.
The story is well paced and carefully constructed, but it loses focus in the final section when savage mayhem erupts.
There is a rich vein of very dark humour in the film, but there's also a lack of identity. Is it a dark comedy or is it a tragedy? It is both, but the two do not blend well enough.

Unpleasant - Under the Tree review by CW
Deeply unpleasant film with people being horrible to each other. I don't know where the humour is supposed to be. I stopped half way through and gave it up as a bad job.

Well acted but very dark - Under the Tree review by CD
The cast and acting in this film is very good and it is interesting to see the Icelandic (?) context. It starts well and establishes a good balance between a more serious theme of relationship break-up and the more comic dispute between neighbours. Unfortunately it goes in a steadily darker and more violent direction. The characters in the film start reaching for the hard liquor and many viewers might need some reinforcement to get through the final part of the film. Not really a comedy in my view.
