Synopsis:
Nicolas Cage plays rogue detective Terence McDonagh in what is being described as 'one of his finest performances' who is as devoted to his job as he is at scoring drugs - while playing fast and loose with the law. He wields his badge as often as he wields his gun in order to get his way. Complicating his tumultuous life is the prostitute he loves - Frankie Donnenfield (Eva Mendes). Together they descend into their own world marked by desire, compulsion, and conscience. The result is a singular masterpiece of filmmaking: equally sad and manically humorous.

Sounds Like a Dare - Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans review by griggs

Nicolas Cage spends this one looking like his spine has filed a formal complaint against the rest of his body, and honestly it's a joy to watch him ignore the paperwork. Werner Herzog and Cage let loose in New Orleans sounds like a dare, and somehow it mostly works.

Terence McDonagh is corrupt, unhinged and weirdly pathetic all at once, and Cage makes him monstrous without ever letting him get dull. The city gives it a damp, slightly cursed texture — sweaty and a bit feral, nothing like the usual polished crime-drama wallpaper. Herzog keeps throwing in iguanas and alligators, and holding dead-eyed stares a beat too long, which stops the film settling into a predictable dirty-cop spiral.

I won't pretend it doesn't take its time to build. The early debts-and-drugs plotting is fairly standard, and Herzog seems in no rush to get to the unhinged stuff. But once Cage and Herzog hit the accelerator together, the whole thing practically vibrates off the screen.

Second-tier Herzog, maybe. Cage, though, is on his own planet.
