Rent The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009)

Walter Garber (Denzel Washington) is a New York City subway dispatcher whose ordinary day is thrown into chaos by an audacious crime: the hijacking of a subway train. Ryder (John Travolta), the criminal mastermind behind the hijacking and leader of a highly-armed gang of four, threatens to execute the train's passengers unless a large ransom is paid within one hour. As the tension mounts beneath his feet, Garber employs his vast knowledge of the subway system in a battle to outwit Ryder and save the hostages. But there's one riddle Garber can't solve: even if the thieves get the money, how can they possibly escape?

Very Average

This film is average at best. It's well made with good acting, especially from Washington, but the whole thing is quite light weight and forgetable. Can only recommend if you can't find anything better to watch

The Taking of Pelham 123 review by Jawbreaker

Underground Over Rated

Taking of Pelham 123 may seem like a strange choice for a modern remake but the script has been revamped to take advantage of modern trends and technology, to reasonable effect. The film now is a by-the-numbers thriller and has lost some of the gritty, claustrophobic feel of the original. In its place is Tony Scott’s trademark advertising style of directing that will irritate. Any sense of drama or inkling of atmosphere is quickly erased by his passion for moving the camera when its not required, or throwing in a quick cut scene from elsewhere or even a visual map of Manhattan. Denzel Washington puts in another good shift here, especially in comparison to Travolta’s bad guy persona, which he’s used again and again in other films.
