I've never read the book so not entirely sure of the exact storyline but having seen multiple ++ interpretations of this (I have to say: extraordinary story) on DVD prior, I'm not sure I totally understand the progress of gentle Miss Bronte's original story - it seems to vary radically in each if the versions. Cathy is a brash and bolshy woman fighting bravely against a man's world.
This one I felt was quite different from the others.
Also, talk about top actors in this version !! : Binoche, Fiennes, McTeer, Shepherd, Northam, Simon and Sophie Ward (Dad and daughter). and Firth.
Heathcliff is a waif and stray brought into the household of Cathy's father Mr. Earnshaw who unfortunately dies early and leaves a totally complicated legacy. Cathy grows up with Heathcliff and basically falls head over heels in love although Heathcliff is treated as an outsider and eventually disappears. She ends up marrying much pleasanter and richer Edgar Linton. .
This version also seems to be costume -wise set in the 1770s to 1790s although I'm sure it was more 1820s to 30s in others - quite confusing.but it advances @20 years anyway. I'm confused.....
Cathy near the end, standing by a dead tree on the moors with her cloak blowing in the wind, reminds me of the FRENCH LIEUTENANT's WOMAN forlorn at the end of the Lyme Regis Cobb jetty.
Beautiful photography though much indoors and thankfully not in the dark as so many recent movies have been where I yell, Turn the &£#@ Lights On!!
