- Professional frame maker Jonathan (Bruno Ganz) has been diagnosed with a terminal blood disease. A chance encounter with the enigmatic Tom Ripley (Dennis Hopper) offers him a way to ensure a stable future for his family. But as Jonathan embarks on his new and dangerous role, Tom questions his motives for involving his new friend.

Highsmith Thriller - The American Friend review by NO
I did not know it was from the novel Ripleys Game & was confused at start but gradually got intrigued.Hopper was excellent & the photography
was very film noir.Ending was strange but I enjoyed watching.

Peculiar - The American Friend review by AER
Meandering first hour left me impatient for this one to land, but once it got going it had some excellent set-pieces. It centres around the reluctant assassin premise only the twist here is the killer's handler begins to act as protector and friend. Unusual with an abrupt ending. I will watch again, now I know what's instore. But was a little underwhelmed to start with.
