He was imprisoned 27 years for his heroic fight against apartheid. So what does Nelson Mandela do after he is elected president of South Africa? He rejects revenge, forgives his oppressors and finds hope of national unity in an unlikely place: the rugby field. Clint Eastwood powerfully directs an uplifting film about a team and a people inspired to greatness. Morgan Freeman portrays Mandela, who asks the national rugby team captain (Matt Damon) and his underdog squad to do the impossible and win the World Cup. One team, one country. The universal language of sports has never spoken so thrillingly as in Eastwood's Invictus.

A wonderful insight behind the remarkable man who is Nelson Mandela, excellently portrayed by the outstanding Morgan Freeman. Matt Damon turns in a fine performance as Pieenar but still lives in the shadow of Freeman. Watched it with my children who had lots of questions about what was going on in South Africa at that the time. Very enjoyable film.

Not up to my expectations

Obviously this story is based on the life of an amazing person so is going to tug at the heart strings. However more could have been done to keep it factual and the pace of the film seemed slow at times. Loved Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon in the film.

Brilliant

I thought this would just be a movie about rugby but is was so much more. I really showed the motivation behind Nelson Mandela and what a great man he really is. It definitely gave me a lump or two in my throat as there were some very emotional moments in it. I think it was absolutely excellent. It's a brilliant film and I can highly recommend it!!!

I am the captain of my soul

From the poem by William Henley the last verse is "It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul." This inspiration was passed from Nelson Mandela to the captain of the South African Rugby team. Morgan Freeman and (a little more surprisingly) Matt Damon are believable and subtle. My main criticisms however would be the cinematography which is bland and the plot which although based on a fantastic political achievement (the abolition of apartheid) is itself otherwise not gripping.
