Matilda Lutz saves the day - Revenge review by BS

Spoiler Alert
12/09/2019

The story and plot are so basic and predictable, it's barely worth mentioning. The story is about the birth of a Mexican Tomb-Raider with murderous revenge in her blood. What it lacks in story and sharp dialogue it makes up for, with the actors, decent directing and cinematography. Matilda Lutz was absolutely brilliant to watch, although obviously there are some uncomfortable scenes, but nothing too nauseatingly graphic for horror standards. Put it this way, I dozed off 10 minutes into the Tomb Raider reboot, but this just about kept me going, and there was a satisfying ending. Major gripe though is the lack of dialogue, so many unanswered questions. Would have been better if Lutz found someone, even if just a Wilson football she could chat with. Also, there was any shock twist or anything unexpected that happened, so that's why it's hard to offer more than three stars.

Gory cult movie - Revenge review by Alphaville

Spoiler Alert
20/12/2018

Although vastly over-rated by critics, Revenge is nevertheless worth a look once you get past the film’s distasteful first half-hour. In a desert house, Matilda Lutz wears skimpy clothes and teases three men until she gets raped and left for dead. That’s no spoiler because the film’s title and trailer tell us as much, so that’s half an hour wasted.

The remainder of the movie (the revenge part) is totally unbelievable, but it’s so well paced and shot that it’s one of those ‘so bad it’s good’ films that, late night after a few pints, could easily become cult viewing. It’s impossible to care about any of the characters, but it races along to a pulsating soundtrack with scenes so gory it almost verges into horror. Best thing about it? The lovingly photographed Moroccan desert, where all the action take place.

Unsettling, Clever Rape/Revenge Thriller - Revenge review by GI

Spoiler Alert
24/06/2025

There is always controversy and mixed views on sexual violence depicted in cinema. The rape/revenge narrative has always been a tricky sub genre to navigate and analyse because of the tendency for it to be focused on the male gaze and a male focused interpretation of rape hence many of the films that go down this road have ended up with very mixed receptions. Revenge has been cited as a subversive take on this mostly based on the fact this is a film directed by a woman. Indeed the sexual violence scene here is not graphic although still impactive and cleverly makes you, the viewer very uncomfortable but the aftermath is certainly tense stuff and not for the faint hearted. Richard (Kevin Janssens) is handsome, married and a rich businessman. He takes the young beautiful Jen (Matilda Lutz) to his remote desert retreat for some extra-marital hanky panky. But his two sleazy friends turn up and when one rapes Jen and she threatens to go to the police they try to kill her. But seriously injured she escapes into the desert and proves to be far more resourceful than the men remotely considered. Yes this is a graphically violent film and also a film with mythical themes of rebirth and beautifully shot utilising vivid colour palette of the desert landscape. There's a survivalist aspect as well as a revenge aspect to the story and it does keep you riveted throughout but it maybe too intense for some. Whatever your tastes I do recommend this, it's a very interesting thriller indeed.
