Rent Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

Take a hilarious ride with the Hoovers, one of the most endearingly fractured families in comedy history.

Father Richard (Greg Kinnear) is desperately trying to sell his motivational success programme... with no success. Meanwhile, "pro-honesty" mom Sheryl (Toni Collette) lends support to her eccentric family, including her depressed brother (Steve Carell), fresh out of the hospital after being jilted by his lover. Then there are the younger Hoovers - the seven-year-old, would-be beauty queen Olive (Abigail Breslin) and Dwayne (Paul Dano), a Nietzsche-reading teen who has taken a vow of silence. Topping off the family is the foul-mouthed grandfather (Alan Arkin), whose outrageous behaviour recently got him evicted from his retirement home.

When Olive is invited to compete in the "Little Miss Sunshine" pageant in fat-off California, the family piles into their rusted-out VW bus to rally behind her - with riotously funny results.

Delightful

Lovely film about a dysfunctional family. 7 year old Olive has an ambition to win a beauty contest and is thrilled to be invited to compete in the Little Miss Sunshine pageant. Her father is too busy trying to make a million with his 'steps to success' programm to really notice her and rants on about winners and losers all the time. Brother Dwayne won't speak and comunicates through notebook and pencil. Her grandfather's swearing and outrageous antics are a source of much amusement. All the while, Mum, played brilliantly by the excellent Toni Collette, supports Olive, trying to make her see beauty is on the inside. The action revolves around an equally dysfunctional bright yellow VW van. A brilliantly acted and directed piece of comedy with some sad and touching moments. A fantastic ending to a well written screenplay. No wonder it was nomintaed for so many awards!

A lovely film

I really like this film, everything about it is perfect. The dynamic of the family seems so true, due to the great acting and the script, which is both poignant and humorous. Abigail Breslin and Paul Dano are two actors to keep an eye on, as they were fantastic. I must also mention Steve Carrel’s performance, which, unlike his usual characters was very understated, I would like to see him take on more roles like this in the future. This film will definitely last over time and end up being a staple classic to any film lovers collection.

Great Fun

Marvellous. You cannot help but love this film with its disastrously quirky family and their van. From a frankly ludicrous premise it takes ever sillier turns, to the satisfyingly cringemaking finale. And if you see some of the plot twists coming over the horizon, it doesn't seem to matter. You just have longer to wonder if they're really going to pull it off. Making full use of a small budget, you can see they all had fun making this film. It's feelgood, it's loopy, it's the road movie to end the genre but it's highly recommended.

Family Togetherness

This starts as disfunctional family chaos but ends with family bonding. Funny but not laugh out loud. You guess the little girl (Abigail Breslin) will not succeed but that doesn't matter. She is the catylst for family togetherness. Greta performances by Steve Carroll and especially Alan Arkin.
