The Lion King 2019: All You Need to Know About the Remake

Here at Cinema Paradiso, we are the film experts. After all, we’ve got a huge selection of films of all genres in our collection.

One of our favourites to be introduced onto the scene though, simply has to be the all-new, live-action The Lion King. Set to be released and due to go live in Cineworld in July 2019 - 25 years after the original. And we can’t wait to get our hands on the movie here at Cinema Paradiso!

The original Lion King movie of 1994 was powerful enough, however, we can’t help but think that the 2019 version is set to be even more emotional. We’re expecting nostalgia and fascinating live-action.

So we know it’s coming, but what questions are we being asked already about the epic The Lion King movie. Here are just a few Q&As about one of the biggest movies of 2019...

Who is directing the Lion King movie?

Jon Favreau will be directing the movie. He has also directed the recent shooting of the modern version of The Jungle Book (2016).

Favreau is an actor, director, producer and screenwriter. You may recognise him as having acted in The Break-Up (2006), Friends (1994-2004) and Chef (2014). He actually also directed Chef! Other films he’s directed include Elf (2003) and Iron Man (2008). He produces films under the name "Fairview Entertainment".

What songs will be in the new Lion King movie?

The Lion King wouldn’t be the same without its’ famous classic hits. Therefore, we should expect "The Circle of Life" and "I Just Can’t Wait to Be King", amongst others.

"Hakuna Matata" will also feature in the film, as well as "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?". In fact, the latter will be performed by Eichner, Glover, Rogen and Beyoncé. Apparently, there will be a brand new song at the end too!

Hans Zimmer scored the 1994 movie and has returned to score the more modern version also.

Who will be playing the characters?

For an A-list movie, there, of course, needs to be an A-list cast and The Lion King definitely doesn’t disappoint. Here are some of the main characters in the movie and who will be playing them:

Simba - Donald Glover

Donald Glover is another multi-talented superstar (like Jon Favreau). He performs music under the name of Childish Gambino and is also an actor, comedian, singer, writer, DJ, rapper and songwriter (wow, that’s a lot of talent!).

In The Lion King, we can expect exceptional performance, in voice acting this time!

Nala - Beyoncé Knowles-Carter

Apparently, Jon Favreau was happy to alter the schedule however he could to get Beyoncé to play the role of Simba’s later love-interest Nala. Even better that she features on the new soundtrack.

Mufasa (Simba’s dad) - James Earl Jones

James Earl Jones really brings the feeling of nostalgia to this movie since he also played Mufasa in the 1994 version of the film. He is an actor who has been around for a long time (60 years in fact!). He has acted in a variety Shakespearean roles, featured in a number of films and also been a voice-over actor in many movies too (most know for the voice of Darth Vader in Star Wars film series).

Sarabi (Simba’s mum) - Alfre Woodard

Alfre Woodard began her acting career in the theatre, yet has appeared in a huge number of movies. She featured in Grand Canyon (1991), Primal Fear (1996) and 12 Years A Slave (2013).

Scar (Simba’s uncle) - Chiwetel Ejiofor

Chiwetel Ejiofor is an English actor who also appeared in 12 Years A Slave and has worked with director Steven Spielberg in the movie Amistad (1997).

Rafiki (Wise baboon) - John Kani

John Kani is a South African actor and is truly the voice of wisdom in the movie.

Timon and Pumbaa - Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen

The lovable Timon and Pumbaa are played by Eichner, who also starred in The Angry Birds Movie (2016) and Rogen, who is an actor, comedian and producer.

Zazu (red-billed hornbill) - John Oliver

John Oliver is also known for being a voice actor in The Smurfs movies. He is the perfect character for Zazu and started his career as a stand-up comedian.

Young Simba - JD McCrary

JD McCrary is a young American actor, currently starring in The Paynes. He is the voice behind young Simba and we’re expecting excellent performance.

Young Nala -  Shahadi Wright Joseph

Shahadi Wright Joseph is thought to be one of the rising stars of 2018/19. She is also famous for appearing in Us (2019) and Hairspray Live! (2016).

Will the plot be the same as the 1994 The Lion King?

While we can’t be sure if the plot will be exactly the same as the 1994 animated version of The Lion King, we can’t imagine that it will be that different.

Of course, the fact that this movie is live-action is a HUGE difference in the animated 1994 version. We’re extremely excited to see the effect.
