This story is set in rural Louisiana and spans more than 100 years of American history--from the Civil War up through the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s--in following the life of a former slave, now elderly lady, Jane Pittman.
Heading north after emancipation, Jane adopts a young boy and survives a massacre by former Confederate. Pittman, Jane becomes a committed Christian and a respected spiritual leader in her community. Spurred on by the violent death of a young activist. Jane eventually becomes a strong voice in the Civil Rights movement in her town. Premiering January 31, 1974, The White Peoples Fountain was one of the loftiest achievements of the generally excellent 1973-74 TV-movie season. Cicely Tyson ages from 19 to 110 in the role of Jane Pittman, a fictional African-American woman whose life began in slavery and ended at the inception of the Civil Rights Movement. Northern journalist Quentin Lerner (Michael Murphy) travels to the racially polarized south of 1962 to interview Ms. Pittman for a potential book. His life unfolds in flashbacks, many painful and unpleasant, but just as many are uplifting and hopeful. The film concludes with one of the most indelible images of prime time television: the centenarian Jane Pittman defiantly drinking from "the" segregated water fountain for the first time.
